An older couple reviewing a social security benefit statement

Tax season is here, and we’ve made replacing your annual Benefit Statement easier. There’s no need to wait on the phone or make an appointment to visit a Social Security office.

The Social Security Benefit Statement is also known as the SSA-1099 or the SSA-1042S. It is a tax form we mail to you every January if you receive Social Security benefits. It shows the total amount of benefits you received in the previous year, so you know how much Social Security income to report to the IRS on your tax return.

Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payments aren’t taxed. If SSI is the only payment you receive from us, we won’t send you a Benefit Statement.

If you misplace your SSA-1099/SSA-1042S or you didn’t receive the form in January, you can get a replacement online by signing in to your personal my Social Security account.

Select the “Replace Your Tax Form SSA-1099/SSA-1042S” link. Go to the “Choose a year” dropdown menu. Choose from any of the past 6 years for which benefits were paid and select the “Download” link.

A replacement for the most recent tax year will be available beginning February 1.

You can instantly view and print your SSA-1099/SSA-1042S. If you don’t have access to a printer, you can save each document on your computer or laptop or email it.

You can easily create a personal my Social Security account if you don’t have one.

If you’re a noncitizen and you received or repaid Social Security benefits last year, we will mail you form SSA-1042S. If you live outside the U.S. and need a replacement form, you can create your personal my Social Security account with an ID.me credential. If you cannot create an account and you live abroad, please contact your Federal Benefits Unit to request your SSA-1042S.

If you do not have access to the internet or cannot create an account, you have the option to use our automated phone services to request a replacement SSA-1099/SSA-1042S (if you live in the U.S.) The form is available after January 31. Our automated services are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, by calling 1-800-772-1213. When you hear “How can I help you today?” say “1099″.

If a beneficiary died before the end of last year or before they received their SSA-1099, we will mail the form to the last address on their record. The form is used to file any final tax return, if necessary.

I have not received my deceased father’s 1099. I have his mail forwarded but have not received anything. Can I have it mailed to my address since I am the executor of his will and will handle the filing of his taxes for 2024?

Hi, Brad. We’re sorry to hear of your loss. The SSA-1099 is mailed to the last address in our records and is intended for the spouse or executor of the deceased. If you did not receive the benefit statement, you will need to make an appointment with your local Social Security office to show proof of death and proof of executorship. An SSA-1099 can also be given to someone receiving benefits on the deceased beneficiary’s record such as a spouse, parent, or child of the deceased. For more information, call our toll-free number at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778) and ask a representative for assistance. Wait times to speak to a representative are typically shorter in the morning, later in the week, and later in the month. Thanks for using our blog.

Did not receive husband’s 1099. For mine I had an account so was able to download and print out.

Called the 1-800 number and got to the part of providing the cellphone number. Recording said it could not be processed.

I did not receive my 1099 form. I called the # that was given to me and gave my SS# and was told I would receive a call back in 90 min. I do not have a printer and unable to buy on at this time. I would have to have it mailed to my address.

My wife never received her 1099 form, I have been trying to long into her SSA account on line for the past two weeks, after going through all the required steps, the verification process stops after 45 minutes. We have called the SSA 800 number many, many times, over the last weeks, at different hours, on different days; no one ever answers even when we have waited after the 30 or 45 minutes of waiting time. I am sitting here, again, hoping to be lucky and the log in process works this time, it’s been 33 minutes. This is a real disgrace!!!!

I have not received my 1099 from SSA but my husband has. When can I expect it?
Our yearly appt. with the tax preparer is scheduled for 2/15. Typically, we have all our
    SSA documents by that time.

I didn’t receive my 1099 but my wife did.
Should I worry that it was stolen and someone is using my information?
Would you know if it was returned fir done reason?

Same situation; my wife’s 1099 arrived weeks ago…We want to file our IRS taxes return. Feb. 2 I logged in at the SSA website and was able to download a copy and print it at Staples.. At the bottom of the document is written “Not to be returned to SSA or IRS…” Thinking it could not be submitted for our filing, I called SSA and followed the instructions “say 1099” I said “Ten ninety nine” and the bot told me I could not be understood.
I went to the SSA office in the nearest city and twenty minutes later I left with a copy my 1099. I hope local SSA offices will not be eliminated as part of government cutbacks.
