Get Your Social Security Benefit Statement (SSA-1099)
Reading Time: 2 MinutesLast Updated: January 30, 2025
Tax season is here, and we’ve made replacing your annual Benefit Statement easier. There’s no need to wait on the phone or make an appointment to visit a Social Security office.
The Social Security Benefit Statement is also known as the SSA-1099 or the SSA-1042S. It is a tax form we mail to you every January if you receive Social Security benefits. It shows the total amount of benefits you received in the previous year, so you know how much Social Security income to report to the IRS on your tax return.
Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payments aren’t taxed. If SSI is the only payment you receive from us, we won’t send you a Benefit Statement.
If you misplace your SSA-1099/SSA-1042S or you didn’t receive the form in January, you can get a replacement online by signing in to your personal my Social Security account.
Select the “Replace Your Tax Form SSA-1099/SSA-1042S” link. Go to the “Choose a year” dropdown menu. Choose from any of the past 6 years for which benefits were paid and select the “Download” link.
A replacement for the most recent tax year will be available beginning February 1.
You can instantly view and print your SSA-1099/SSA-1042S. If you don’t have access to a printer, you can save each document on your computer or laptop or email it.
You can easily create a personal my Social Security account if you don’t have one.
If you’re a noncitizen and you received or repaid Social Security benefits last year, we will mail you form SSA-1042S. If you live outside the U.S. and need a replacement form, you can create your personal my Social Security account with an ID.me credential. If you cannot create an account and you live abroad, please contact your Federal Benefits Unit to request your SSA-1042S.
If you do not have access to the internet or cannot create an account, you have the option to use our automated phone services to request a replacement SSA-1099/SSA-1042S (if you live in the U.S.) The form is available after January 31. Our automated services are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, by calling 1-800-772-1213. When you hear “How can I help you today?” say “1099″.
If a beneficiary died before the end of last year or before they received their SSA-1099, we will mail the form to the last address on their record. The form is used to file any final tax return, if necessary.

How do i get a 1099 corrected? There was a big mistake in my 1099 for 2024. In March I repaid more than $20,000 in benefits I had received in 2023 (in order to claim the higher amount for when I turned 70). Eventually I had received a large lump sum payment (for retroactive benefits while my payments had been suspended), but the lump sum was not “offset” by the payment that I had made. And the 1099 does not reflect the payment I had made. This will have enormous consequences not only on my taxes but also raise my Medicare payments for my wife and me.

I tried that but person on line was not really helpful. All she did was set up an appointment for the end of March in my local office, which is too late. And, when I called the local office I was told that they really couldn’t help anyway, that it was payment center issue. She mentioned there was a new program on the system for dealing with 1099 errors. Can you Please help me reach someone at SSA who can resolve this in a timely manner? I am pretty sure it is a clear error and I have documentation.

fyi. Third time is the charm (I hope). I was able to reach someone helpful (Kiera), who, unlike her colleague, was able to efficiently take the information and process a request for a corrected 1099. Still takes 30-60 days but at least it is hopefully in the works.

I have not yet received our 1099 forms for me and my husband.
I was able to go online and create an account for me and printed ming out, but how do I request my recently deceased husband’s 1099 for this hears tax filing?
C.B.
Hi, Delores. We’re sorry to hear of your loss. The SSA-1099 is mailed to the last address in our records and is intended for the spouse or executor of the deceased. If you did not receive the benefit statement, you will need to make an appointment with your local Social Security office to show proof of death and proof of executorship. An SSA-1099 can also be given to someone receiving benefits on the deceased beneficiary’s record such as a spouse, parent, or child of the deceased. For more information, call our toll-free number at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778) and ask a representative for assistance. My first ever payment was for the month of December 2024. It was supposed to be paid out on December 31st. It did not post in my bank until 2025. Will I get a SSA 1099 for 2024? Or does the December payment count towards tax year 2025? I have not received a 1099 in the mail and there is no drop down menu available in my online account to access one. Thankyou

I entered My Social Security account easily but was denied access to the 1099 tax form. What happened? I did not receive the form in the mail this year as I have in years past.

I never received my 1099 for 2024. I called to get it and you want to access my credit report which I have locked for my protection. I can’t u lock it while on the phone! By law you are to get my 1099 to me. I can’t print it from home. This is ridiculous that you never sent it and calling got no results.

My mother died in 2024 and we have not received her SSA-1099 for 2024. She had recently moved to Michigan to live with one of her children, and we don’t know if the Social Security Admin. has her final address (in Michigan). Online access for her SSN account has been blocked, and when I phoned 800-772-1213, I was on hold for one hour and 45 minutes (at which point I hung up the phone). How can I get her final SSA-1099? Thank you (please help :))

My spouse passed away in 2024 and I attempted to get his 1099 on line but was rejected. Has his SS information been blocked? I have not received our SSA-1099forms in the mail.

It seems there are a goodly number of us that have not received our 1099 document. It is not a problem for me as I went online and printed a replacement, thank you SS for making it easy. I am however a bit concerned about identity theft knowing that my 1099 may be floating around out there.

Can I use the 1099 form I can print online for my taxes and just make copies for my tax preparer. Unable to get through – wait time is an hour.
Thank you.

I have not yet received my 2024 1099 form by mail. But in my Social Security account, an “initial 1099” is posted. I’ve not seen this before. Can I use the “initial” 1099 data on my tax return, or wilI I receive a “final” 1099? I can’t find this info anywhere on the SSA website.
Thank you
C.B.
Hi, Pat. Thanks for using our blog. The Social Security Administration only issues one SSA-1099. There is not an initial and final. We hope this information is helpful.
