We’re making changes to the way you access Social Security’s online services, including your personal my Social Security account. The changes will simplify your sign-in experience and align with federal authentication standards. At the same time, we’re continuing to provide safe and secure access to our online services.

If you created your my Social Security account before September 18, 2021, you will still be able to use your username and password to sign in. However, you will not be able to do so for much longer.

In the near future, all users will need to have an account with one of our two Credential Service Providers (CSP) – Login.gov or ID.me – to access your personal my Social Security account and other online services.

To learn more, read our press release. If you have an existing Login.gov or ID.me account, you do NOT need to create a new one. And, if you can access your personal my Social Security account through Login.gov or ID.me, you don’t need to take any action.

If you don’t have a Login.gov account

To avoid any disruptions in accessing Social Security’s online services you may want to transition your account now by signing in with your Social Security username. Our online instructions will guide you through the process of creating a new account with Login.gov. Once you successfully link your personal my Social Security account with your new Login.gov account, you’ll get a confirmation screen and have immediate access to our online services. In the future, you’ll sign in to your account with Login.gov and not your Social Security username.

Login.gov offers 24/7 customer phone and chat support to answer your questions.

We encourage you to make the transition to Login.gov or ID.me now before the username option goes away later this year.

You’ll find more helpful information here.

Please share these important upcoming changes with your family members, friends, and colleagues.

Wow, just wow. Login.gov refuses my phone number. I no longer use a smartphone and have been able to handle everything through computer or non smartphone. I guess it is time to opt out of using electronic notification and switch to paper and USPS mail. Not a republic or democracy, we are really ruled by big tech. Login.gov is AWS (Amazon). ID.me, a private corporation. Not enhaced security. Enhanced stress, enhanced vulnerability, enhanced data mining. How dystopian. I’m in tears. Praying for heart attack in my sleep. I had made my living in system analysis. Totally disgusted on how tech has been turned against us. We paid, and now paying even more for this bondage. I feel both bad and guilty to leave my children, grand children and their children in this…. There’s no where to go, to hide from these incompetent tech overloards. I stopped online shopping, searching, cancelled all services. Now I guess it will be using USPS mail and in person. Thank you so much for the misery.

I followed the procedure to get into ID.me and it asked if I want a call or text. I opted for call. No call came in. I then logged in again, thinking that maybe I did something wrong, but again I asked for a phone call and none came. How do I get around that???

What is the actual deadline for this?
What does “later this year” mean? I see so many complaints I’m hesitant to do this until SSA gets the kinks worked out. Would like to do it soon, but see nowhere any information about an actual deadline date.

      Hi Melanie,
Hi. I just read something online that stated the deadline for switching to the new SS system is August 30, 2024. After reading the myriad of complaints from many poor people, I can’t imagine that SS will hold fast to that deadline!

Frustrating and not worth the time and trouble,
gave up, I don’t need online access! Know what Social Security can do with their online access, take a guess!

    • Susan

I’m about ready to give up on it, been trying for over a week, on hold for an hour and half with SS – was told there must be a gitch…ya no kidding. Gave me a # to call Login.gov – can’t talk to anyone, the prompts they give don’t apply to my problem of getting an error 403

As requested I created a login.gov account but when I sign in to My SS it wants me to verify my ID because I don’t have a verification code (separate from security code). The site only offers a format for US addresses and phone numbers in order to verify ID. I live overseas like thousands of citizens! I emailed the foreign branch over 2 weeks ago and still waiting. Anyone else encountered this and found a solution?

I had a social security account be fore but since you’ve changed things I cannot get to my account I have tried a few times and still can’t into my account.

I entered my username and password, then received my 6 digit code and entered that, then it takes me right back to my sign in page. Really frustrating.

  8. Tim

Why is the site not accessable at 10pm AZ time?

  9. Larry K.

Another fine mess. Used to take me two clicks to access my account 30 seconds. Now I spend 15 minutes with paper and pen try to collect password and numbers. Good work.

Hi, I changed over to the Login.gov, but after I registered and signed in, it only showed stuff about retirement. I need to know about my disability case. When I was using the old way, all I had to do was put in my username and password and it took me straight to it. Now I don’t see anything about my disability case. I need help!!!
