We’re making changes to the way you access Social Security’s online services, including your personal my Social Security account. The changes will simplify your sign-in experience and align with federal authentication standards. At the same time, we’re continuing to provide safe and secure access to our online services.

If you created your my Social Security account before September 18, 2021, you will still be able to use your username and password to sign in. However, you will not be able to do so for much longer.

In the near future, all users will need to have an account with one of our two Credential Service Providers (CSP) – Login.gov or ID.me – to access your personal my Social Security account and other online services.

To learn more, read our press release. If you have an existing Login.gov or ID.me account, you do NOT need to create a new one. And, if you can access your personal my Social Security account through Login.gov or ID.me, you don’t need to take any action.

If you don’t have a Login.gov account

To avoid any disruptions in accessing Social Security’s online services you may want to transition your account now by signing in with your Social Security username. Our online instructions will guide you through the process of creating a new account with Login.gov. Once you successfully link your personal my Social Security account with your new Login.gov account, you’ll get a confirmation screen and have immediate access to our online services. In the future, you’ll sign in to your account with Login.gov and not your Social Security username.

Login.gov offers 24/7 customer phone and chat support to answer your questions.

We encourage you to make the transition to Login.gov or ID.me now before the username option goes away later this year.

You’ll find more helpful information here.

Please share these important upcoming changes with your family members, friends, and colleagues.

If I want to log in while I am outside US,I can not receive code from my US phone number. Is there other way to log in without code from phone number?

  2. Kristy S.

This is not a wise Decision. Those who have a hard time with the Set up now will have even harder time with the new one. The new Change will not make it simpler.

I tried to make the transition as requested by SS in a recent e-mail to login.gov or ID me account after logging in with my user ID and password to my social security account it keeps telling me it send the verification code to my email, but it is not getting through. I’ve checked spam and trash. It’s not there. I’ve never had any problem in the past getting the code through my email and I have not changed anything.

I created a login.gov account but I didn’t link my SSA account. I already had a id.me account. It won’t let me link the new login.gov account with my SSA account. I can still get to SSA with id.me. But I can’t log directly into SSA. Don’t know what to do.

Hello how are you doing? This is Chandra Deqon Buford Mother and I am trying to find out how I can login because I have created a pass code so it will not let me go through so I need some type of help if you can give me a call at 773-587-2200 and help me

Just call the number provided under “contact us” once you talk to a human… Social Security representative will verify your identity. They will then correct your issue in a matter of minutes.

I tried to set up the login.gov account but it got to confusing to answer some of the questions.
I give up. I will make a phone call and have people help me.
I agree with many comments saying questions are not clear and info is not clear.
      Confusing.

I created a Login.gov account but I continue to get an error message that my email is incorrect ( and it is not) !

same here. system will not allow me to complete new acct.

If I already have an ID.me account to login into social security do I also need to have a Login.gov account? The website needs to say something about current users with an ID.me account. Right now the page is a little confusing.

    • Kristen F.

I do not believe you have to have both. I believe they said you have one or the other not both.

    • Martha W.

No just one or the other

  9. Jo H.

This is a problem for our household as we share one email. Now we need two emails, two passwords and have to check each other’s phones for security codes when we are filing our joint tax return. What a nuisance!

  10. Richard D.

When I attempted to transition to Login.gov I received an error message that my email was already associated with a Login.gov account. However I had not set up a Login.gov account. I called SSA and after a long wait was able to speak to someone. We determined it was easiest to just click forgot password. I then received an email letting me create a new password. The instructions on the website are not clear. trying to log in with SSA.gov username to link is not an option when creating new account. You have to use email address that prompts error (account already exists for this email)
There are some bugs that need to be worked out
