We’re making changes to the way you access Social Security’s online services, including your personal my Social Security account. The changes will simplify your sign-in experience and align with federal authentication standards. At the same time, we’re continuing to provide safe and secure access to our online services.

If you created your my Social Security account before September 18, 2021, you will still be able to use your username and password to sign in. However, you will not be able to do so for much longer.

In the near future, all users will need to have an account with one of our two Credential Service Providers (CSP) – Login.gov or ID.me – to access your personal my Social Security account and other online services.

To learn more, read our press release. If you have an existing Login.gov or ID.me account, you do NOT need to create a new one. And, if you can access your personal my Social Security account through Login.gov or ID.me, you don’t need to take any action.

If you don’t have a Login.gov account

To avoid any disruptions in accessing Social Security’s online services you may want to transition your account now by signing in with your Social Security username. Our online instructions will guide you through the process of creating a new account with Login.gov. Once you successfully link your personal my Social Security account with your new Login.gov account, you’ll get a confirmation screen and have immediate access to our online services. In the future, you’ll sign in to your account with Login.gov and not your Social Security username.

Login.gov offers 24/7 customer phone and chat support to answer your questions.

We encourage you to make the transition to Login.gov or ID.me now before the username option goes away later this year.

You’ll find more helpful information here.

Please share these important upcoming changes with your family members, friends, and colleagues.

Didn’t recognize the 6 digit code. Received 2 numbers thru text acct. and 1 number thru phone call. Obviously none of them worked.

More complexity. More confusing accounts to keep track of. Poor instructions. Tired of constant process updates to do simple tasks. Very inconsiderate of seniors who are not tech savvy. I have no confidence in the security of any business transaction completed through the internet.

I cannot get into my account

When attempting to login via Login.gov there is a prompt to enter a one-time code that should be a sms to my cell phone. The code expires before the sms arrives on my phone.

I am frustrated. I had a legacy MySS account years ago. Today I tried to logon and accidently went to the new system and created an account when I should have done that from my legacy account. Now I can’t get into either accounts. Not receiving a text code on the new one and the legacy logon isn’t being recognized in the old account.

I spent over 3 hours trying to get the updated login. I got a far as uploading the picture ID and things stopped dead. I tried taking the pictures of my ID using the on-line method then tried taking pictures of my picture ID and uploading them all to no avail. I got things like picture is too blurry, too small, and lots of try again. I quit – I guess I will never be able to sign in to this again. VERY FRUSTRATING

I have a ID me already setup but my phone number changed. How do I get this corrected so I can login?

Performed the ID.me version (which was a RPITA in and of itself), when logging in the SSA site to get to my account, and says there is an error on the SSA side, and to close all computer browsers…did the same using the old SS login…got the same message on screen…have closed ALL browsers and same issue…so how does one get to their account when they already have an account…and can’t even check – since the same error message pops up no matter which version is used to log in? I want to go back to getting the paper version – can’t see my ‘internet’ version anymore. Fantastic idea there SSA – now everyone is locked out.
