Changes Are Coming to How You Access Social Security’s Online Services
Reading Time: 2 MinutesLast Updated: January 22, 2025
We’re making changes to the way you access Social Security’s online services, including your personal my Social Security account. The changes will simplify your sign-in experience and align with federal authentication standards. At the same time, we’re continuing to provide safe and secure access to our online services.
If you created your my Social Security account before September 18, 2021, you will still be able to use your username and password to sign in. However, you will not be able to do so for much longer.
In the near future, all users will need to have an account with one of our two Credential Service Providers (CSP) – Login.gov or ID.me – to access your personal my Social Security account and other online services.
To learn more, read our press release. If you have an existing Login.gov or ID.me account, you do NOT need to create a new one. And, if you can access your personal my Social Security account through Login.gov or ID.me, you don’t need to take any action.
If you don’t have a Login.gov account
To avoid any disruptions in accessing Social Security’s online services you may want to transition your account now by signing in with your Social Security username. Our online instructions will guide you through the process of creating a new account with Login.gov. Once you successfully link your personal my Social Security account with your new Login.gov account, you’ll get a confirmation screen and have immediate access to our online services. In the future, you’ll sign in to your account with Login.gov and not your Social Security username.
Login.gov offers 24/7 customer phone and chat support to answer your questions.
We encourage you to make the transition to Login.gov or ID.me now before the username option goes away later this year.
You’ll find more helpful information here.
Please share these important upcoming changes with your family members, friends, and colleagues.

Hi Ronald, Tried a vpn? Get a Google eMail with a gVoice phone number. Your computer can answer and make calls via gVoice. This is a suggestion, haven’t tested.

Hi David, thank you for using our blog. For security reasons, we do not have access to personal information in this venue. It may be best for you to visit your local Social Security office to discuss your Medicare Part B. Hope this helps!

Very frustrating! It seems that in order to set up a Login.gov account one must have a smart phone–I don’t. I don’t have a physical storage device (or what ever you call it).

We’re sorry for your loss, Jeri. For your security, we do not have access to private information in this venue. If you have questions about your husband’s last Social Security check, you can contact your local Social Security office or call us at 1-800-772-1213, Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.
In general, you and your husband had to be married for at least 9 months for you to be eligible for surviving spouse benefits. However, there are exceptions. The 9-month duration of marriage is not required under certain circumstances, for example, if you’re caring for your husband’s child, if his death was accidental, or the two of you were previously married for at least 9 months, divorced and later remarried. You’ll find more information about the exceptions in the Social Security Handbook. If you have questions, please contact your local Social Security office. We hope this helps.

Very frustrating !
Everything went thru OK except I am not receiving the account activation code, after several tries, the system send me the deny notice below :
We cannot create an account for the Social Security number you entered.
For further assistance, please contact us.

Same here. I created mine and was sent back up codes, then was asked for an activation code but never received any

So, if I already have ID.me, I don’t have to do anything else, right? Because Login.gov is saying I already have an account, which is not correct. I have never signed up with that.
