Changes Are Coming to How You Access Social Security’s Online Services
Reading Time: 2 MinutesLast Updated: January 22, 2025
We’re making changes to the way you access Social Security’s online services, including your personal my Social Security account. The changes will simplify your sign-in experience and align with federal authentication standards. At the same time, we’re continuing to provide safe and secure access to our online services.
If you created your my Social Security account before September 18, 2021, you will still be able to use your username and password to sign in. However, you will not be able to do so for much longer.
In the near future, all users will need to have an account with one of our two Credential Service Providers (CSP) – Login.gov or ID.me – to access your personal my Social Security account and other online services.
To learn more, read our press release. If you have an existing Login.gov or ID.me account, you do NOT need to create a new one. And, if you can access your personal my Social Security account through Login.gov or ID.me, you don’t need to take any action.
If you don’t have a Login.gov account
To avoid any disruptions in accessing Social Security’s online services you may want to transition your account now by signing in with your Social Security username. Our online instructions will guide you through the process of creating a new account with Login.gov. Once you successfully link your personal my Social Security account with your new Login.gov account, you’ll get a confirmation screen and have immediate access to our online services. In the future, you’ll sign in to your account with Login.gov and not your Social Security username.
Login.gov offers 24/7 customer phone and chat support to answer your questions.
We encourage you to make the transition to Login.gov or ID.me now before the username option goes away later this year.
You’ll find more helpful information here.
Please share these important upcoming changes with your family members, friends, and colleagues.

Congratulations to the SSA, they have now made it easier for hackers to acquire even more information on their clients. SSA has joined a system that used by so many other governmental agencies that they only have to get into one system and hackers have my credentials for a number of agencies that I have to interface with. What happened to the security rule of not using the same credentials for more than one site?

This transition is not functioning. I attempted to transition my SSA sign in with UN and PW to Login.gov by following the prompts. At no time will it send me an activation code, on my third attempt, it sent me an email stating My SS number was already associated with a login.gov account and could not create a login.gov account for me. But I was never permitted to complete the process on all 3 attempts. I called the number provided for assistance and am currently on a call back list.

Guys, what is going on? It tells me it’s sending a code to the emauil I’ve had for twenty five years, it doesn’t send one, it asks if I want to change the way it sends the code, I say yes, it then takes me straight back to the email it refuses to recognise or send a code to. I can’t access ANYTHING.

Terrible experience. First it does not recognize my email address. Then it does. Then it will not accept my activation code. I enter information SS has on file so they will recognize my account but purpose for logging in was to change my home address and phone #. Now I get message they will send activation code to my former address within 15 days. I call SS to talk to agent and there is 59 minute wait time. I’m sure that’s why phone lines backed up – website lacks information, clarity and is not linking up accts created before 2021. Sad situation

I just tried to open a Login.gov account. Everything went well setting up the username and password until I tried to get into my social security account. It asked me for my ss # and the activation code. It would not accept the activation code from Login.gov, which is only 6 digits. It wanted an 8 digit code, which was not sent to me similar to what others have experienced. I am now on hold via your phone line with an estimated wait time of 1 hour and 4 minutes. Very frustrating!

I have set up the Login.gov account, or so I thought.
Everything went OK except I am not receiving the account activation code, after three tries. Pls. allow the system to send me the account activation code.
Thank you.

I attempted to transition my saa account into Login.gov by authenticating my identity. Once I uploaded my identity info it was followed by saying that my identity couldn’t be verified. Please let me know if this action will move me along with the transition to Login.gov. Thank you, Douglas Dekoning
