Changes Are Coming to How You Access Social Security’s Online Services
Reading Time: 2 MinutesLast Updated: January 22, 2025
We’re making changes to the way you access Social Security’s online services, including your personal my Social Security account. The changes will simplify your sign-in experience and align with federal authentication standards. At the same time, we’re continuing to provide safe and secure access to our online services.
If you created your my Social Security account before September 18, 2021, you will still be able to use your username and password to sign in. However, you will not be able to do so for much longer.
In the near future, all users will need to have an account with one of our two Credential Service Providers (CSP) – Login.gov or ID.me – to access your personal my Social Security account and other online services.
To learn more, read our press release. If you have an existing Login.gov or ID.me account, you do NOT need to create a new one. And, if you can access your personal my Social Security account through Login.gov or ID.me, you don’t need to take any action.
If you don’t have a Login.gov account
To avoid any disruptions in accessing Social Security’s online services you may want to transition your account now by signing in with your Social Security username. Our online instructions will guide you through the process of creating a new account with Login.gov. Once you successfully link your personal my Social Security account with your new Login.gov account, you’ll get a confirmation screen and have immediate access to our online services. In the future, you’ll sign in to your account with Login.gov and not your Social Security username.
Login.gov offers 24/7 customer phone and chat support to answer your questions.
We encourage you to make the transition to Login.gov or ID.me now before the username option goes away later this year.
You’ll find more helpful information here.
Please share these important upcoming changes with your family members, friends, and colleagues.

This new login.gov system is a mess. You can’t access face authorization or touch screen. It keeps saying error or create a new password. I think you may need to start over and until it’s fixed keep the old system. It is way to confusing and difficult.

Tried to set up ID.Me account 3x If ID.Me expects one to use a cell when it asks for your Cell # then it attempts to connect your name with address on your DL and cell to do credit check .If you never give out cell and or use another add for your credit then ID.ME fails to authorize . Several glitches in system need fixing if your expecting us to use these 3rd party services to be verified ..as well as in these days of cybersecurity they are requesting a lot of info including taking pics of you your DL ect ..Who knows when we’ll be involved these days in another breach of our info ! Dean requires serious rethinking

For a combination of technical and security reasons, I cannot use Login.gov safely. This page must provide detailed alternatives. Elsewhere on the site it talks about id.me, but this page is silent on the subject.

I have an ssa.gov username and password that I setup years ago. I have a login.gov that I use for my estimated taxes.
The question is how do I transition my SSA login to the Login.gov?
When I login to my SSA account the transition button says “create a login.gov account” – but I already have one.
Should there be two buttons, one for setting up a new login.gov and one for if you already have a login.gov account and just need to link it to the SSA account?
Thanks.

I created a login.gov id and when I tried to access SSA it says I am suspended based on info from a trusted partner. I get into login.gov I see ssa is connected but can’t access. Who is this trusted partner? You know I worked for IBM for 30 years and this is not a user friendly website. How do you expect an elderly person to access this? This is a mess sorry. This needs to get straightened out and simplify the access

Nothing so constant as change. Can anyone explain to me how/why the SSN became the uniform identifier for all financial and technological services?
