We’re making changes to the way you access Social Security’s online services, including your personal my Social Security account. The changes will simplify your sign-in experience and align with federal authentication standards. At the same time, we’re continuing to provide safe and secure access to our online services.

If you created your my Social Security account before September 18, 2021, you will still be able to use your username and password to sign in. However, you will not be able to do so for much longer.

In the near future, all users will need to have an account with one of our two Credential Service Providers (CSP) – Login.gov or ID.me – to access your personal my Social Security account and other online services.

To learn more, read our press release. If you have an existing Login.gov or ID.me account, you do NOT need to create a new one. And, if you can access your personal my Social Security account through Login.gov or ID.me, you don’t need to take any action.

If you don’t have a Login.gov account

To avoid any disruptions in accessing Social Security’s online services you may want to transition your account now by signing in with your Social Security username. Our online instructions will guide you through the process of creating a new account with Login.gov. Once you successfully link your personal my Social Security account with your new Login.gov account, you’ll get a confirmation screen and have immediate access to our online services. In the future, you’ll sign in to your account with Login.gov and not your Social Security username.

Login.gov offers 24/7 customer phone and chat support to answer your questions.

We encourage you to make the transition to Login.gov or ID.me now before the username option goes away later this year.

You’ll find more helpful information here.

Please share these important upcoming changes with your family members, friends, and colleagues.

I hear you and I know exactly what you are going through, even though I save all my accounts and passwords on Google it gives me the same message over and over and well you get the picture, what I did to fix this problem is…..I have no idea one day it just started working

Trying to be proactive and change to Login.gov. Now I can’t access my account. I will be calling in the AM as I have successfully locked my account.
Step by step instructions would be helpful and less confusing.
    Thank you

I tried to create a Login.gov account and after it accepted my password I went to next step for security and I hit enter for my choice and I keep getting a error code and says it can’t go forward. Try another time !! It’s not working !!

Tried to set up my login.gov today; got my email and password approved but keep getting an error message after clicking my security choice. Will not let me proceed beyond this point….

The transition has not been successful for me. I am now unable to access my social security account even though I have been validated with my login.gov id. I have called ss office multiple times and been told they cannot help me. I have also been told that problem was escalated but I have not been contacted. I am beyond frustrated as I have received email saying I have a message in my account. I cannot access account so how can I read it!!!

What date do I need to make this change? I tried a few weeks back and kept getting error. I had to call SS to delete my attempt to transition. Found out I had to create a new email for this transfer. Can you make this transition a little easier with a video step by step?

SSA better fix these errors. Won’t be changing until the database is corrected. Do not trust any databases anymore with all the hacking going on.

When creating my new login.gov account, you sent me a 6 digit confirmation number to use, which I did. At that time you should have instructed me to keep that number, because you were going to require it again further into the process. I deleted that number from my phone as soon as I used it the first time and don’t remember what it was. Now I can’t complete my registration, and you didn’t provide a way to fix the problem when I entered the wrong number at the second request. I don’t know where to go from here.

Like everything else. The old program worked great. Now for no reason they changed it. Now nothing works right. Can’t verify anything. The moment I check email for the code, the system shuts down. Typical. If it works…break it.
